Chirurgeon Bellan Tortega reports on the status of Astropath Kai Zulane, advising his transfer back to the Astra Telepathica for recovery.[2c] Seer Hunter Yasu Nagasena parleys with Atharva before ordering the capture of the Crusader Host.[2d]

The Imperial Palace, 005.M31. Rogal Dorn insists the Astra Telepathica put all available resources to maintaining the Imperium’s communication network as Ferrus Manus hastens to face the traitors on Isstvan V.[2e]

Part One: Dreams of the Red Chamber

Zulane arrives at the Imperial Palace and, inside it, the City of Sight. In the Petitioner's City, Navigator Roxanne Castana runs afoul of local gang members and kills them before fleeing.[2f] Cryptaesthesian Evander Gregoras objects to Zulane's return but focuses his attention on uncovering the Pattern he thinks lies in the accumulated remnants of two centuries’ worth of astrotelepathic messages. At the Temple of Woe, Castana tells Palladis Noviando of her run-in with Babu Dhakal's men. Zulane is welcomed by his mentor Aniq Sarashina and assigned a novitiate's cell.[2g]

Zulane starts working with Athena Diyos, and in his mindscape they encounter a representation of the Argo, the ship Zulane was assigned to and whose crew he felt dying after a Gellar field failure.[2h] Diyos has a vision Sarashina and she interpret as the expedition to Isstvan V turning into a disaster. Dhakal's enforcer Ghota comes to the Temple demanding Castana be surrendered to him, but his men are slain by a mass psychic phenomenon.[2i] Diyos tells Zulane she was mutilated when the Phoenician was destroyed by the Diasporex, as news of the Drop Site Massacre and the extent of the rebellion reaches the City of Sight. Nagasena prepares for a new hunt to come.[2j] While panic spreads on Terra, Zulane encounters in his mindscape an intruder who tells him he will witness an event of great magnitude. Gregoras brings the other head astropaths' attention to the possible involvement of Magnus the Red in future events.[2k]

Zulane and Diyos ask Gregoras about Cognoscynths, psykers of unfathomable power believed to be extinct, as Magnus disrupts the Webway Project in an attempt to warn the Emperor of Horus's betrayal.[2l] The shockwave touches the whole planet, and Sarashina is imbued with knowledge borne by a warp rift.[2m] She hides it within Zulane's psyche before Major General Maxim Golovka of the Black Sentinels shoots her dead. Zulane is arrested by Saturnalia of the Custodes, who intends to find out the nature of that information whatever the cost.[2n]

Part Two: The Veiled City

Atharva ponders the Crusader Host's imprisonment and senses Zulane's arrival.[2o] In the prison of Khangba Marwu, Custodians Tirtha and Uttam fulfill oversee the treatment of prisoners while neurolocutors Hiriko and Scharff probe Zulane's mind.[2p] Atharva lays the groundwork for an escape attempt, Zulane is determined to pass on Sarashina's message to whomever it is intended for, and Gregoras tries to reconstruct that same information from the aftermath of Magnus's intrusion.[2q] Atharva enthralls both Scharff who releases Zulane, and one of the wardens who turns on Tirtha. In the ensuing breakout and fight, Tagore kills the other Custodian.[2r] Using the warp to slow down the decay of Uttam's severed head, Atharva fools the security system into letting seven of the Crusader Host go. Hiriko is forced to kill Scharff, and Atharva breaks into the interrogation chamber.[2s] Zulane and the newly dubbed Outcast Dead steal a cargo flier and are pursued by Firelance aircraft. Atharva confuses the pilots into killing one another, but the flier crashes into the Petitioner's City.[2t]

Nagasena prepares to lead a hunting party including Diyos, Hiriko, Saturnalia, Golovka and thirty Black Sentinels. As the Outcast Dead must contend with a lethally wounded Orhu Gythua, Atharva tells Zulane Magnus told him about the astropath's importance. In his lair, Babu Dhakal learns of the escapees' arrival and Gotha gathers warriors to recover the Astartes' gene-seed.[2u] Atharva and Tagore discuss their future course of action – going back to their Legions – and the significance of Zulane – whom Atharva believes knows the outcome of the civil war. The hunters are listening through the astropath’s augmetic eyes, which Asubha gouges out.[2v] The Outcast Dead barge into the office of Antioch, a local medicae, and have him look after Zulane and Gythua.[2w] Gregoras has a glimpse into the pattern and sees different events of the millennia to come. In the Petitioner's City, Gotha and his men attack the Outcast Dead, who slay them all bar the enforcer, but lose both Gythua and Argentus Kiron in the fight.[2x] Zulane has another conversation with his psychic intruder, the future recipient of his message. Antioch tells the hunters their prey is heading to the Temple of Woe, and Govolka executes him.[2y] Zhi-Meng goes to Gregoras, who has been driven insane by his visions and kills himself. The Outcast Dead set out to cremate their fallen brethren. The hunters receive new orders and are now a kill team.[2z] Zulane and Castana catch up while the kill team prepares to slaughter everyone in the temple. As Severian slips away to find a space-capable craft, Babu Dhakal arrives.[2aa]

The gang lord reveals himself to be a Thunder Warrior, but before he can offer the Astartes a deal the kill team moves in. Tagore and Nagasena duel, the World Eater ending up shot to death by Golovka, and Zulane is faced with Kartono.[2bb] Subha and Asubha slay Saturnalia but die of their wounds. Atharva severs his connection to the warp to save Zulane from the Culexus and unleashes an Angel of Death: one of the temple's statues, inhabited by a neverborn and bent on snuffing out all life. Castana and Zulane go into the latter's mindscape to complete his mission.[2cc] Faced with the truth of the Argo's fate, he lets go of his guilt and sees what will happen aboard the Vengeful Spirit. He passes the knowledge on to his intruder, the Emperor, who will prepare for the outcome. Atharva kills Kartono and the Angel becomes stone again as a force of Silent Sisters enters the temple, followed by Dorn.[2dd] The primarch executes Atharva, and Zulane asks Castana to let him die by her eye rather than plunge the Imperium into despair with knowledge of the Enthronement. Nagasena agrees to one last hunt, that of Severian, and Babu Dhakal uses the Astartes' gene-seed to preserve his and Ghota's lives.[2ee]
