Legion is a novel by Dan Abnett and the seventh book in the Horus Heresy Series.

Published in March, 2008, Legion features a purple spine-band, the first novel in the series to do so. It is set two years before the beginning of the Horus Heresy and focuses on the Alpha Legion Adeptus Astartes as well as some elements of the Imperial Army and a Xenos group known as the Cabal. It was later included in "The Novels: Volume 2" eBook collection.

Cover Description

A Great War is coming, and it will engulf the Imperium of Man. The Space Marines of the Alpha Legion, the last and most secretive of all the Legiones Astartes brotherhoods, arrive on a heathen world to support the Imperial Army in a pacification campaign against strange and uncanny forces. But what drives the Alpha Legion? Can they be trusted, and what side will they choose when the Great War begins? Loyalties are put to the test, and the cunning schemes of an alien intelligence revealed.[1]

Part One: Reptile Summer

Nurth, c. 003.M31. Hetman Hurtado Bronzi of the Geno Five-Two Chiliad's Jokers is forced to watch from afar as Peto Soneka’s Dancer company is ambushed. Soneka is one of the survivors after the intervention of Alpha Legion Astartes.[2b]

Five weeks later, Soneka is asked to identify the corpse of a Dancer in Visages. Soneka insists it is not one of his men, and Bronzi sets out to bring the body to Uxor Honen Mu. At dawn, the Dancers' R&R location is attacked by Echvehnurth, and Bronzi's rendezvous turns lethal as an Alpha Legionnaire executes his fellow Hetman Dimiter Shiban and points his bolter at him.[2c] John Grammaticus, an agent of the Cabal posing as Imperial spy Konig Heniker, gives Uxor Rukhsana Saiid the report on his infiltration of Mon Lo. The two strike up a love affair, but Grammaticus goes back into Mon Lo to prepare the incoming Imperial assault. In the Nurthene city, he is psychically goaded towards its main temple, panics, and is corralled into entering an Alpha Legion safehouse.[2d] The Cabal has been manipulating things so that the XX would enter the Nurth campaign, which the Xenos intend to use as a demonstration of the real threat the Primordial Annihilator poses. However, the safehouse is compromised and Grammaticus escapes in the ensuing chaos.[2e]

Three days later, Teng Namatjira, Lord Commander of the 670th Expedition Fleet, is personally touring the Mon Lo theater, as the city has been screaming under the cover of ominous dark clouds. At a briefing, Namatjira and Mu become suspicious of Saiid, who has been harboring Grammaticus in secret. Soneka reports to Mu, who claims she knew nothing about the body's transfer, leaving the Hetman to lose his trust in everyone around him.[2f] Involvement of the Alpha Legion is officially acknowledged at a ceremony Grammaticus is spying on. Dinas Chayne nearly catches him, and he momentarily diverts the genewhips' attention away from Saiid. Soneka catches a glimpse of Bronzi, although the latter vanishes in the crowd.[2g] Grammaticus is forced to kill one of the Lucifer Blacks when he is spying on a meeting between Alpharius and Namatjira. Soneka is interrogated by the genewhips about Rukhsana and the body, but escapes aboard a speeder piloted by Bronzi.[2h] Bronzi takes him to an Alpha Legion hiding place in the desert and reveals that the rendezvous was the result of their communications being intercepted, and he is now an operative of the XX. "Alpharius" outlines the nature of Chaos to Namatjira, who agrees to let him use the psykers under his command.[2i]

In the desert, Grammaticus is contacted by Slau Dha, who insists on the importance of the mission and reveals that the Nurthene are in possession of a Black Cube.[2j] Mu tells genewhip Boone to let the matter of Soneka's escape go, vouching for him and Bronzi. They are to ensure the Chiliad is clean from spies, and Soneka is designated acting Hetman for the Clowns. Chayne figures out "Heniker" is the spy he is after, and Bronzi and Soneka exfiltrate Saiid. They leave her in the hands of the XX, and surrender to the Lucifer Blacks.[2k] The Hetmen lie their way out of it, while Saiid is interrogated by the Astartes about the Cabal and Grammaticus. The latter infiltrates the Imperials' central security center to retrieve intelligence about Saiid's whereabouts, raising suspicion from Chayne.[2l]

An unnatural dust storm hits the Imperial lines, unleashing swarms of Nurthene combatants. Grammaticus tracks down Soneka who takes him to Alpharius.[2m] The Primarch listens to Grammaticus's explanation that the enemy's self-sacrificial tactics actually empower the Black Cube, and that Nurth has less than a day before all life on it becomes unsustainable. He agrees to order the withdrawal of the expeditionary forces.[2n]

Part Two: The Halting Site

Five months later, the Battle Barge Beta reaches the 42 Hydra System, Grammaticus a prisoner aboard.[2o] Awaiting what remains of the 670th Fleet above 42 Hydra Tertius, Alpharius imposes his terms for the meeting with the Cabal while Grammaticus has a breakdown upon learning that Horus Lupercal is now Warmaster.[2p] As the Geno prepares for the drop onto the planet, Namatjira demands more information out of Alpharius, whom he increasingly mistrusts.[2q]

Soneka springs Grammaticus out of his cell; they bring along a traumatized Saiid and board a drop-pod.[2r] In the planet's region artificially made breathable for humans, the Geno deploys as the escapees begin the trek to the Cabal's actual location.[2s] Chayne confronts Boone about the spying on Nurth, linking Soneka with the Alpha Legion, and demands the drop coordinates of Bronzi.[2t] Grammaticus makes contact with the Cabal, but Soneka and Saiid activate a beacon and the Alpha Legion teleports in.[2u] The Lucifer Blacks arrest Bronzi as Alpharius Omegon demands to be shown proof of the civil war to come.[2v] While Bronzi is being brutally interrogated, the Cabal's ship lands on the planet.[2w]

On board, Gahet explains that, with the Horus Heresy now inevitable, the Alpha Legion must join the traitors to ensure their victory and the ensuing extirpation of Chaos from the galaxy through humankind's extinction. The Primarch, the psyker Shere and Soneka are subjected to the Acuity, seeing in an instant the outcome should the loyalists prevail: millennia of stagnation leading to the eventual return of Chaos.[2x] Alpharius Omegon commits to the Cabal's design and turn on the Imperial forces, boarding Namatjira's ship and leaving the Geno to die as the artificial atmosphere on the planet is shut down.[2y] Soneka rescues Bronzi, Alpharius kills Chayne and Namatjira, and the ships Alpha and Beta destroy what remains of the Fleet.[2z] Aboard the Cabal ship, Grammaticus wishes to end his service to the organization, and kills himself knowing he has doomed his species.[2aa]
